The Role of A General Dentist
Author: Dr. Alison V. Berger, DMD, FAGD
Did you know that at Spring Lake Dental Group we have four general dentists, and an orthodontist? But, what is the role or difference of a general dentist?
A general dentist is commonly known as just a “dentist”. We are the broad spectrum therapist for most of your dental needs. I also like to describe one of our roles, as the bridge between other specialists and healthcare providers. Within our practice, we are in charge of diagnosing an extremely wide array of conditions. Depending of the severity or intricacy of the condition, it will ultimately be referred to the appropriate specialist to be treated.
As a generalist, we diagnose and treat dental caries (cavities); perform extractions and some surgeries, such as implants; replace teeth by removable or fixed appliances. Also, we take care of pediatric patients and intervene in their growth and development, in order to aid or prevent the need of braces. In addition to these, we can perform root canals, so we can save an aching tooth. On our daily schedule, we partner with our hygienist for treatment of gum disease, and in some instances, surgical approaches may be recommended and treated for. As you can see, we get our hands on every specialty of dentistry! But at the same time, we understand that we have our limitations, and trust the expertise of our specialist colleagues for the treatment of more compliance cases. There can even be cases where multiple specialists will need to work together, and we are the link that communicates and holds together all the moving pieces.
But, there is more! Dentists can have early detection of a some systemic conditions that can manifest in the mouth, head and neck, and properly refer to primary care providers, or other physicians. Episodes of uncontrolled high blood pressure or sugar levels can also be found while in the dental chair. Therefore, proper follow up is encouraged to the patient.
Now you know a bit more of some of the fun we can have as a general dentist!
