Mental Health Awareness Month
Author: Kimberly N. Powell, DDS, MS, FAGD
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. For the past 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services remarked that our country is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis that isn’t just affecting adults but devastating young people and people from every background. To respond to this crisis, there are many federal programs in place to address mental health challenges faced by our youth, pregnant and postpartum individuals, fathers, LGBTQI+ youth and young adults, isolated older Americans, caregivers, the disabled, people experiencing homelessness, children at risk of entering foster care, and others. The structured support that is available for our communities is invaluable. It is important to be a safe space for the people we share our lives with to express themselves freely, to listen, and if needed, respond in love.
